I make super natural skin care products by hand here at the The House on the Ford in The New Forest.

I first started to learn about making skin creams after reading the book Beauty and Medicine by a French dermatologist Doctor Aron-Brunetiere. I was looking for the answer to my own problem skin which was oily and prone to breakouts.

What I read was the exact opposite of conventional advice for spots - the doctor taught me that the worst thing you can do is dry out the skin with harsh cleansers an spot treatments because the natural response will be the pumping out of more sebum to redress the balance. Instead he taught that one should use a rich water in oil emulsion ( more oil than water) to settle the skin's over production of sebum. At the time of my reading this the only oil rich product available in the UK was Pond's cold cream which I used for years, bit shiny on the face and made with mineral oil but it worked and my face cleared as was predicted.

The same formula of a "more oil than water" emulsion works for dry skin; there is no such thing as a moisturiser because the water molecule is just to big to pass the skin barrier. In fact some commercial moisturisers, especially the light ones that sink in so easily are so full of water that the water is left on the surface of the skin to evaporate and leave the skin dryer than ever. Think of chapped hands if you don't dry them properly, they tend to be dry and flaky.

The moisture in you skin comes from the inside out, the best way to preserve this moisture is to prevent it evaporating into the dry air by protecting the surface of the skin with an oil rich cream or facial oil.

So impressed was I by all this common sense advice which I had proved for myself to work that I decided to learn how to make my own face creams. I wanted to combine the science of Doctor Aron-Brunetiere with my love of natural, organic ingredients, chosen with the same care about purity and freshness as my food.
